The Challenge is a flexible award scheme designed to encourage young people to venture into the outdoor world by using maps and developing their navigation skills. Young people earn awards by locating checkpoints using a map. They can do this by:
· Attending an orienteering event
· Making use of a Permanent Orienteering Course
· Finding checkpoints set by their teacher or youth leader
Each participant needs a log book to record their progress. These can be obtained by contacting Sue Hooton or Sally Wilkinson at a SUFFOC orienteering event.
Up to 14 checkpoints can be recorded per event. An adult such as a teacher or SUFFOC club member must sign the logbook to confirm that the checkpoints have been found.
There are five awards available depending on the number of checkpoints located:
· Acorn certificate 10 checkpoints
· Tree Award 25 checkpoints
· Copse Award 50 checkpoints
· Wood Award 75 checkpoints
· Forest award 100 checkpoints
For the Tree, Copse, wood and Forest Awards a multi coloured woven badge is available in addition to the certificate. Checkpoints located for one award count towards the next.
